Nashville
Nashville, the capital of Tennessee is the second largest city in the state in terms of population after Memphis. It has the fastest growing and largest metropolitan area of Tennessee, spanning various counties. Nashville has many universities and colleges in the city as well as the metropolitan area, so it is commonly known as “Athens of South”.
Home of music industry
Nashville is a major center of music, health care, transportation and publishing. It is known as “home of country music” and is one of the major production and recording centers of the country. All the major recording centers have their offices here and mostly, they are placed in the area of Music Row. After New York, Nashville is the second largest center for music production in the country. The industry of Christian pop and rock music is also based in Nashville. Various popular acts of genre such as Michael W Smith, Rebecca St James, Newsboy, Steven Curtis Chapman and Amy Grant are based here. Nashville’s music industry provides employment to nearly 19,000 people of the city. Other major industries of the city are insurance, publishing and finance.
Cultural importance of Nashville
Nashville’s cultural life mostly revolves around its large university community and in particular, two groups of writers and critics, Aquarians and Fugitives of Vanderbilt University who lived in the early twentieth century. The popular destinations of the city which tourists must visit are The Parthenon, a replica of Parthenon in Athens, Greece, Fort Nashborough, a reconstructed structure of the original settlement and Tenessee State Museum. Nashville is famous for its State Capitol building, which is among the oldest working America’s state capitol buildings. Tourists visiting the city must visit Nashville Zoo which is the newer attraction of the city.
Music and Art in Nashville
Although Nashville was never popular as a jazz town, it had many great jazz bands. Some of the popular ones include the Nashville Jazz Machine and its present version, the Nashville Jazz Orchestra and The Establishment led by Billy Adair. The radio station WMOT has played a significant role in the city’s jazz scene as it holds popular Nashville Jazz Workshop . One of the major performing art centers of Nashville is the Tennessee Performing Arts Center. The centre is home of Nashville Children's Theatre, Nashville Ballet and Tennessee Repertory Theatre. It has various museums and art centers as well. Some of the famous museums and art centers are Museum of Art and Cheekwood Botanical Garden, Frist Center for Visual Arts, the Tennessee State Museum, Vanderbilt University's Fine Art Gallery, Fisk University Van Vechten and the Aaron Douglas Gallery and Sarratt Gallery.
Climatic conditions in the city
The climate of Nashivelle is humid subtropical. Summer is generally hot and humid, while winter is ocassionaly chilly and mild. Fall and spring are pleasant but severe thunderstorm generally occurs during this time.
Nashville is served by Nashville International Airport. It served as a hub for American Airlines between late 1880 to early 1990. But now the airport is hub for Southwest airlines. Eleven airlines have about 424 daily flights operating from Nashville International Airport.
